CAF CC: Uganda’s representatives fail at final hurdle, Kaddu’s Berkane make dramatic comeback

Al-Hilal Ommurmdam who qualified for the group stages of the CAF Champions League will be the only representatives from the CECAFA region in the 2019/2020 edition. 

The return leg of the play-off round qualifiers of the 2019/2020 CAF Confederation Cup were played over the weekend, with 16 clubs confirming their slots in the group stage of the competition.

Uganda’s representatives in the competition Proline FC and KCCA FC both failed their respective tests, as they crashed out of the competition. 

Proline failed to capitalize on home advantage when they hosted Libyan side Al Nasr in Kampala. The Matia Lule coached side lost 2-0 courtesy of Khalid Almaryami and Osama Albedwi first half and second half strikes respectively.

Although Proline entered this game carrying a two away goal advantage after a two-all stalemate in the first leg, they totally failed to replicate the form exhibited in the first leg and as a result, they were knocked out 4-2 on aggregate.

KCCA FC, on the other hand, were thumped 4-1 against Paradou on Sunday night at the Stade 5 Juillet in Algiers.

Salaheddine Herari, Yousri Bouzok, Abdelkahar Kadri and Aimen Bouguerra scored the goals that knocked the Uganda Premier League champions out of the competition while Allan Okello scored what proved to be a consolation. 

In Morocco, Patrick Kaddu’s RS Berkane knocked out Malagasy side Fosa Juniors following an emphatic comeback on Sunday evening at Stade Municipal de Berkane.

The Oranges scored five unanswered goals against their Malagasy visitors to reach the group stage with a 5-2 aggregate win, Alain Traore and Mohamed Aziz scored twice each before Hamdi Laachir scored the fifth goal.

In Egypt, Abdu Lumala and Sebastien Desabre’s Pyramids easily cruised past Juma Balinya’s Young Africans with a 3-0 win at the June 30th Stadium to qualify to the group stage with 5-1 on aggregate.

Eric Traory, Mohamed Farouk and Abdallah El-Said scored for the Egyptian side to easily win against Young Africans, Pyramids had won the first leg 2-1.

Elsewhere, Shafik Batambuze’s Gor Mahia failed to make it to the group stage after losing 2-1 to Motema Pembe at Stade des Martyrs on Sunday in Kinshasa. Motema Pembe progressed to the group stage of the competition 3-2 on aggregate following a one-all stalemate in the first leg.

Vinny Bongonga and Junior Kone scored for the home side while Gor Mahia’s only strike was from Wellington Ochieng. The group stage draw is slated on November 10th, the group stage games will kick off on November 29th.
