Proline Football Club have disappointingly crashed out of the CAF Confederations cup, after falling to Libyan side Al-Nasr FC, in the return leg of their play-off round qualifier at the StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo.
Proline headed into the game with the upper hand after picking up a 2-2 draw away in the first leg, in Alexandria.
Two goals either side of the half time break by Khalid Almaryami and Osama Ibraheim Albedwi, ensured that the Libyans pick up a 2-0 victory, which is enough to see them progress to the group stages of the confederations cup, 4-2 on aggregate.
Proline had not lost a game up to this point in the qualifying rounds crumbled at the most unfortunate time, with history of becoming just the second Ugandan side to qualify for the group stages of continental club competitions beckoning.
The hosts started the better side pushing for an early goal and had an early chance, but defender Mustafa Mujjuzi’s effort from the free kick could not beyond the wall.
Al-Nasr drew first blood and gained advantage in the tie, when forward Almaryami rattled the back of the net in the fifth minute.
Proline went in search of the equaliser and twice came close, but were denied by the woodwork. Bright Anukani saw his shot hit the upright, while midfielder Arnold Serunjogi saw his header hit the cross bar in the 34th minute.
Al-Nasr headed into half time break in the lead.
At the resumption of the second half, Proline Coach Matia Lule made a double change, bringing on Egaku Allan and Okiror Joshua coming on for Arnold Sserunjogi and Sam Kintu.
Al-Nasr goalkeeper Fathi Abdullah reacted well, sprinting off his line to deny Proline striker Hamis Kizza in the 49th minute. Three minutes later, Anukani had a superb shot saved by Fathi for a corner kick.
Proline again rued their luck from the resulting corner kick, as Muwanga’s header kissed the cross bar.
The Libyans doubled their lead in the 65th minute, Osama’s long range effort beating goalkeeper Hassan Matovu. All but ending Proline’s chances of progressing to the next round.
Proline threw the spanner into the works in search of a way back into the game, but Al-Nasr literally put their bodies on the line to thwart anything Proline threw at them.
In the 85th minute, Al-Nasr managed to clear the ball off the line following a goalmouth melee.
The Libyans managed to hold onto their advantage, as they sealed their first qualification to the group stages of the continental competition.
