CHAN 2020: Cranes fly to Cameroon

Uganda Cranes booked their fifth straight Championship of African Nations (CHAN) slot after a 3-0 win over over Burundi on Saturday at StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo.

Cranes who qualified 6-0 on aggregate scored through Vipers SC striker Fahad Bayo, Wakiso Giants’ Vianney Ssekajugo and KCCA FC’s Allan Okello.

Bayo calmly controlled Mustafa Kizza’s cross before slotting past Onesime Rukudo in the Burundi goal as early as the fifth minute.

That goal was supposed to set the ball rolling for the  Cranes who dominated possession and dictated play but couldn’t stretch their lead in the first half of the game.

Okello and Mike Mutyaba who were supposed to compliment Bayo upfront played deeper than usual, covering yards of space as they tracked down opponents.

That took a lot from their game especially in front of goal as Bayo then turned wasteful from the little creativity that came through.

Nicholas Kasozi and Yusuf Ssozi’s work rate in the middle of the park kept centre backs John Revita and Halid Lwaliwa comfortable.

Willa Paul and Kizza who ventured upfront every time Cranes had possession struggled with their final deliveries.

Cranes had to wait for the 70th minute for substitute Sekagujo to score a second off a well laid cross from Willa.

Okello added a third in the 83rd minute after the Burundian shot stopper’s goal kick didn’t reach it’s destination.

At the end, the Cranes scored a total of 13 goals in the qualifiers with Patrick Kaddu scoring four of those in a campaign that they conceded just two.
