CAF CL: What you need to know about KCCA’s opponents

Uganda Premier League champions KCCA FC, will face Angolan outfits Atletico Petroleos de Luanda in CAF Campions League first round qualifier match on Saturday 14th, September at Estadio 11 de Novembro in Luanda.

The two sides will face again for the second leg of the encounter, two weeks later on Friday September 27th, at Star Times Stadium Lugogo.

The winner between the two sides will advance to the group stage, while the loser will enter the CAF Confederations Cup play-off round.

Atlético Petróleos de Luanda also known as Petro de Luanda, nicknamed Os Tricolores or Os Petrolíferos is a traditional football club from Luanda, Angola and was found in 1980.

The clubs is the most successful club in Angola, winning 15 league trophies to date, though their final league triumph came in 2009, with its first title coming 17 years ago in 1982.

They have 11 Angola Cup titles, winning their latest in 2017 and they have won six Angola Super Cups.

This year’s CAF Champions League edition is the eighth time Atlético Petróleos de Luanda are participating in the competition with their last involvement coming in 2010.

Their best performance in the champions league came in 2001, the club enjoyed a successful campaign, topping their group before falling to Mamelodi Sundowns at the semi-finals stage on penalties after both legs ended 2-2. 

They have seven CAF Confederations Cup appearances and four CAF Cup Winners’ Cup appearances.

They are coached by Spanish tactician Toni Cosano who took over last year from Brazilian gaffer Beto Bianchi.
