Ugandan players abroad: Kasumba scores on continental debut for Zesco

Ugandan players continue to make a case for themselves across the globe in different competitions, the CAF Confederation and Champions Leauge and other European leagues. Ronald Lusulire writes.

Juma Balinya made his debut on the continent in the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League as Yanga Africans drew one all with TownShip Rollers in Dar es Salaam. Midfielder Ivan Mbowa wasn’t part of Rollers’ 18 man squad.

Former Maroons’ striker George Abege was in the Starting eleven of Asante Kotoko as they lost 3-2 away at Kano Pillars of Nigeria.

Umaru Kasumba who left Sofapaka in Kenya for Zesco United in Zambia netted on his debut as his new side defeated Green Mamba of Etswani 0-2 away from home. Uganda Cranes skipper Denis Onyango was in goal as Mamelodi Sundowns fell to Otoho D’oyo 2-1 away from home.

His deputy Robert Odongkara wasn’t in the 18 man squad as his new side Horoya of Guinea drew 1-1 away at Stade Malien of Mali. Jamal Salim Magoola didn’t also feature for his Al Hilal Omdurman side as they drew 1-1 away at Rayon Sports of Rwanda.

Left-back Shafiq Batumbuze played 90 minutes as his Gor Mahia side drew 0-0 away at Angle Noir of Burundi.  Defender Savio Kabugo wasn’t part of the AS Vita side that drew 0-0 away at UMS Deloum of Cameroon.
 
In the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round first leg, Right back Nicholas Wadada played full time as his Azam FC side lost 1-0 away to Fasil Ketema of Ethiopia.
 
Pacy and trickery winger Abdul Lumala didn’t make the 18 man squad as his new home Pyramids led by former Cranes coach Sebastien Desabre defeated Étoile Du Congo 3-0.
 
Left-back Fred Nkata and William Wadri started as their Bandari side drew 0-0 at home to AL Ahli Shendi of Sudan.  Paul Musamali wasn’t in the 18 man squad as his Buildcon FC side lost 0-1 at home to Young Buffaloes.

In Vietnam, Moses Oloya put up a brilliant full-time performance as his Hanoi side thumped Thanh Hoa 5-0  in the V-league at the San Van Dong Hang Day Stadium to consolidate the top spot with 40 points from 20 games.

Still, in the V-league, midfielder Geoffrey Baba Kizito was an unused substitute as his Saigon FC side lost 0-1 at home to Bin Duong at the San Van Dong Thong Nhat stadium to drop into 13th place on 23 points from 20 games.

Forward Joseph Mpande played full time for Haiphong as they drew 0-0 away from home to Song Lam Nghe An at the San Van Dong Vinh stadium to move level on points with  Saigon FC from 20 games played.

In the Major League Soccer (MLS), Micheal Azira was an unused substitute at his new side Chicago Fire as they defeated Montreal Impact (Azira’s immédiate former club) 3-2 in a game that was attended by 11002 fans.

Azira was handed jersey number 16 at Chicago Fire and now teammates to Bayern Munich and Germany legend Bastian Schweinsteiger who netted their winning goal in the 88th minute.

In the Swedish Allsvenskan, defender Ronald Mukiibi started before paving way for Blair Turgott in the 46th minute as his Ostersunds KF side shared spoils 1-1 away at GIF Sundsvall.
Another Ugandan Isak Ssewankambo wasn’t in the 18 man squad for Ostersunds, they now sit in ninth place on 21 points from 19 games.

Still in Sweden, in the division one Norra group, forward Alexis Bakka played the entire game as his Carlstard FC side defeated Nykoping 2-1 at the Tingvalla IP stadium to move into fifth place on 30 points from 18 games.

Another Ugandan forward Fabian Derrick Suubi Kizito also played the entire game for Nykoping, the result took Nykoping to 15th place on 13 points from 18 games.

Right-back Herbert Bochorn was an unused substitute in matchday two of the Championship in England as Huddersfield Town side drew 1-1 away to QPR at Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium to pick up their first season point.

William Luwagga Kizito was on the bench as Shakter Karagandy lost 1-2 at home to Ordabasy in Khazakstanian top tier league, a game watched by 7000 spectators. Shakter Karagandy now sit seventh with 30 points from 22 games.

At the Phillips Stadion in the Dutch Eredivisie, PSV Eindhoven defeated Ado Den Haag 3-1 in an encounter striker Melvyn Lorenzen didn’t make the 18 man squad for Ado Den Haag.

Moses Opondo came on in the 57th minute for Troel Klove as Odense Boldklub defeated Randers 1-0 in the Danish Superliga, at the Nature Energy Park stadium.

Still,in Denmark, midfielder Robert Kakeeto wasn’t in the 18 man squad as Aalborg defeated Ebsjerg 4-0 at the Aalborg Portland Park.

Isaac Muleme is yet to feature in any game in the new season as he was again not part of the 18 man squad for Viktoria Zizkov who won 2-0 at home to Vitkovice in the Czech Republic second division league. They moved to eighth place on six points from four games.

In the Croatian HNL Premier League, Miya Faruku came on in the 75th minute for Lukasz Zwolinski as his Gorica side defeated Rijeka FC 2-0 at the SRC Velika Gorica stadium to move into fourth place on seven points from 4 games.

Left-back Alex Kakuba made his league debut for his new side Cova Piedade in the Portugues Segunda League as they lost 3-2 away at the Estadio Municipal De Mafra stadium. At his new side, Kakuba dons Jersey number 3.
