AFCON 2019: FUFA never anticipated Cranes beyond Group stages

While the talk in the Cranes camp was ‘we want to get out of the group,’ at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations, the football governing body FUFA thought otherwise.

The Cranes were drawn in Group A alongside hosts and seven-time champions Egypt, DR Congo and Zimbabwe.

The group looked tough and FUFA didn’t see the Cranes going past the group stages reason players’ return ticket dates back home and their respective clubs were for July 1st.

“My tickets says I must fly back on July 1st, probably the people concerned didn’t see us beyond the group stages,’ a Cranes player told

Uganda qualified for the Round 16 with four points and in second place after defeating DR Congo 2-0 and drawing with Zimbabwe 1-1, only lost to group winners Egypt 2-0.

The Cranes are slated to play Senegal on July 5th at the Cairo International Stadium with a quarterfinal slot in sight.

The team is currently reportedly on a sit-down strike over FUFA failure to clear their allowances and bonuses.
