After the news of Tanzanian Premier League champions Simba SC’s withdrawal from the tournament, few hours later other Tanzania giant in Yanga Africans SC have announced their withdrawal from the tournament.
In the official statement issued by the club, they claimed that they are not ready to take part in the tournament held in Kigali, Rwanda between July 6th and 21st.
“We are not in a position to take part in the competition and wish to take this opportunity to thank CECAFA for the invite but we promise to take part in the future tournaments,” the statement reads.
Yanga had been invited into this year’s edition as a guest team but they refused the invite claiming that the team is currently facing several challenges.
They also cited that part of their players had left the club after their contracts ran out, so they are in a rejuvenation process of the team hence couldn’t get a proper team for the competition.
The team further stated that their available players are already on holiday ahead of the 2019/2020 season.
Yanga Africans finished second in 2018/2019 Tanzanian Premier League with 86 points, seven points behind eventual champions Simba SC.
They last won the tournament in 2012 when they edged their counterparts Azam 2-0 at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
