Uganda Martyrs University beat Gulu University 3-1 to finish top of Group B in the 2019 Pepsi University Football League on Saturday in Gulu, the former together with St Lawrence progressed to the knockout stages.

It was a dull game in the opening 45 minutes of the game, only to turn into a game of rich promise when it started raining goals inside the last 20minutes.

Ali Swalley gave UMU the lead in the 75th minute, a minute later Ronald Ssempala scored the second and a third with a minute left on the clock. Geoffrey Opwonya pulled one back for Gulu in added time.

“Having already qualified we were looking for maximum points to finish top and we were able to capitalize,” UMU coach Noah Mugerwa told

There was immense pressure to second placed ST. Lawrence who drew against Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU) in the other game of round five in Group B. But UMU’s victory over Gulu meant that they also go through as group runners up.

Group B games will round off next week with UMU hosting ST Lawrence, Gulu will visit IUIU in a chase for who finishes third and fourth respectively to avoid relegation.
