Unbeaten Vipers sack Espinoza

StarTimes Uganda Premier League holders Vipers Sports Club have parted ways with Mexican coach Javier Martinez Espinoza just after four months and 23 days into his two year contract.

“Vipers SC has this evening terminated the services of its head coach Javier Martinez Espinoza,” a statement on the club’s official website read.

“Vipers SC will in the next 24 hours make major announcements on the new technical team after the restructuring aimed at helping Vipers achieve its desired objectives at both local and international level.”

It’s believed that the Mexican’s poor return of results have forced the club hierarchy to part way with him just after 11 outings in the league.

News of Espinoza’s sacking started circulating after Vipers settled for a barren draw against Tooro United on Saturday at St Mary’s Kitende.

It’s also alleged that Espinoza and the Vipers hierarchy have been at loggerheads for sometime especially since he doesn’t seek their advise in different areas concerning the team.

At the time of his sacking, unbeaten Vipers were sitting second on the 16 team log with five points behind log leaders KCCA FC and two games in hand.

The club had played 11 games, winning seven and drawing just four, scoring 17 times and conceding only eight times.

Espinoza’s also over saw Vipers’ elimination from the 2018/2019 Total CAF Champions League after they lost 3-0 to Constantine on aggregate.

Before losing to the Algerian giants 2-0 at Kitende, Vipers had never lost a CAF game at home, they also hadn’t conceded at home.

Espinoza replaced Portuguese Miguel Da Costa who was fired after leading the side to league glory the final of the Stanbic Uganda Cup and a quarter final finish at the Cecafa Kagame Cup

It’s not clear who will replace Espinoza whether on permanent basis or interim but it’s Mubarak Wamboya, Edward Ssali who have been working closely with him as deputies.
