FUFA introduces five new awards for 2019 Airtel-FUFA awards

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations has today launched the fifth edition of the Airtel-FUFA awards, where the top performers for the year 2019 will be rewarded for their efforts and achievements for the year.

The awards gala is scheduled for the 14th of December, 2019, at a glamorous awards night to be held at the Commonwealth Speke Resort, Munyonyo.

A total of 14 categories will be voted for and awarded on the evening, with the Male Player of the year and the Female Player of the year awards the highlights of the evening.

For the fifth edition, FUFA have announced five new award categories that will be voted for. These include Airtel-FUFA Best XI 2019 and Airtel-FUFA Women coach of the year for women football, to add on the male versions of the awards.

There will also be recognition for the Team Fans of the year that will be chosen from all FUFA competitions that include the Uganda Premier League, Big league, FUFA Drum, Women football and the like.

There is also a new FUFA Member Associations’ Award and the Best Squad of a particular year, and this will be inclusive of the club and national teams.

However, for the 2019 edition, there will be two voting rounds before voting is opened to the public.

Initially, each of the coaches and captains of UPL clubs and FUFA women Elite League nominated their top five candidates for the male and female awards respectively, from which a list of 16 male and 12 female nominees were drawn.

There will be a second round of voting by the coaches and captains for the male player and female player of the year to determine the top five nominees, after which voting will be open to the public with voting scheduled to open from 14th November until 14th December.

According to the chairman of the awards committee Rogers Byamukama, the move to have two voting processes is to improve on the selection criteria, from the more famous choices being voted for to having a more technical and informed choice for the winner.

“In the past, we have had a challenge where the most famous nominee has been voted for, instead of the more technically gifted. But this time round, we shall have two rounds of voting, from which we are confident the more technical choice will be made.”  Byamukama said.

Three categories will be included in the voting process, with the coaches carrying 50%, captains taking up 25% and the fans constituting 25% of the final votes.
