COSAFA U-17 FINALS: Uganda vs South Africa, Sunday 29th September 2019

Uganda U-17 women national team head coach Ayub Khalifah has praised star player Fauzia Najjemba after her continued man of the match performances at the COSAFA U-17 women tournament.

The Mukono high school teenage forward scored six goals in the semi-finals of the tournament, as Uganda were 12-0 winners over Botswana at the St. Francois stadium, Mauritius, yesterday.

Najjemba has already been capped twice by the senior Uganda national women team, the Crested Cranes.

The forward did not have the best of starts in the team, struggling during the team’s build up matches despite coming in with huge promise.

But Ayub has had to patiently wait and keep faith in her, and his faith in her has been paid off by putting on man-of-the-match performance twice in the four games they have played at the COSAFA.

“I always look to build-up my team from the midfield but this time Najjemba was the outstanding player, she stepped up her game and that’s what we expect from her,” Ayub told media.

“She has not been playing well and that’s where patience is needed and with time, they tend to find their feet and she has done that.” He continued.

Against Botswana, she opened the scoring for Uganda, grabbing two first half goals before adding four in the second stanza.

As well as Najjemba’s double hattrick, skipper Juliet Nalukenge grabbed herself a hattrick to take her tally in the tournament to 17 goals and extend her grip on the top scorer’s gong.

Uganda are the highest scoring side at the tournament with fourty-four goals in four games thus far.

Uganda will face off against South Africa in the first ever COSAFA women U-17 championship final on Sunday.
